The creative mind can sometimes be impossible to define. After reading this quote (below) from W.G. Sebald, I realized that the struggles of all artists across various forms of art may be universal. There is a shared need to find inspiration in silence and an understanding that the nature of creativity is always elusive, never fully quantifiable or completely understood.
In recent years, I have felt compelled in my writing to address the brutality of the Holocaust and other atrocities, recognizing that words often fall short of capturing the depth that music can convey. In 2021, the jury members of the "American Prize" acknowledged my chamber work "Camp Speicher," which I dedicated to the Iraqi Air Force cadets who were massacred during what they believed was a release to visit their families. As the father of an American Air Force cadet, I felt a personal connection, deeply rooted in my father's stories of his time in World War II. Can grief be passed down through generations? This quote certainly represents my daily struggles to bring the imagination to light.
Timothy Brown, 2024
This is my space to discover opportunities for unlocking imagination through writing. The all-consuming process begins here, yet it travels with me throughout every waking moment of the day. I sometimes wish I could turn off my subconscious mind like a light switch; however, it is as inseparable from me as light is from the day. Both aspects of thought are required to create the complete whole.
